Sometimes life can feel like sailing the ocean, enjoying calm waters and negotiating waves when they arrive. We may coast along for a while then hit unexpected rough water and have to use all our physical and emotional strength to balance and successfully navigate through. Too many high waves may feel exhausting and leave us less able to manage the next one. Traumatic events may even temporarily capsize our boat leaving us in chaos. This is where our personal resilience is important. 

Resilience is the ability to rapidly and effectively rebound from the effects of a stressful or traumatic incident.

Who is this course for?

This eLearning is designed to help individuals understand that we can all encounter unexpected incidents and events that come in many shapes and sizes, throughout our lives - and that we all respond differently depending on numerous factors.  If something like this does happen, our world can change too quickly, we can often feel a little disorientated and overwhelmed and we must process that and deal with the changes. If we don’t understand what is going on in our brains and bodies, this can add to the distress we are already feeling.  

What will I learn?

 
At the end of the training you will 
  • Understand the early reactions to unexpected or distressing incidents.
  • Be aware of helpful things you can do to help yourself or others who are experiencing these reactions. 
  • Be aware of unhelpful things to avoid whether this is for you or for someone you are supporting. 
  • Learn skills for managing emotional resilience.

I don't have a lot of time or concentration at the moment. Will the training be difficult?

We understand that people are busy and have lots of competing demands. At times of high stress, this is even more so and our levels of concentration and focus can be reduced. We wanted this eLearning to be easily accessible with bite size videos, that can be viewed whenever needed. It is private, simple, engaging, and effective. You can dip in and spend just 5 or 10 minutes on the areas that are most important to you. Or you can spend longer and learn new skills. The choice is yours. You have the course for 1 year and you may also want to revisit parts. 

What if I need more?

KRTS Power to Respond is an educational resource. It's not therapy or medical advice or a replacement for these when they are required.
Sometimes, during the learning, people recognise that they may benefit from further support and we hope that the understanding this course gives you will encourage you to do so if that is the case. Further support is usually available through your employer, your healthcare provider or other mental health services but it is outside of the remit of this course.
